A MESSAGE FROM DES PLAINES COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE MADELINE MAY:
The City of Des Plaines is updating its website and Channel 17
cable site with information on H1N1 as it becomes available. Cook
County Department of Public Health continues to follow the
guidelines set forth by the Center for Disease Control for
vaccinations. The targeted priority population includes :
pregnant women; those caretakers and household contacts of children
under six months of age; healthcare and emergency medical services
employees; individuals six months to twenty four years of age and
individuals twenty five to sixty four years of age with underlying
medical conditions, such as asthma or diabetes.
As the flu outbreak continues to grow the City of Des Plaines
strongly encourages you to use good health habits to stay healthy
and avoid spreading germs. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue
when you cough or sneeze. Immediately throw this tissue away after
use. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you
cough or sneeze. Hand sanitizers are also effective. Avoid touching
your eyes, nose and mouth. Avoid close contact with sick people.
Signs and symptoms include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and
coughing. Some people may also experience a runny nose, sore throat,
nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
If you have these symptoms, stay home from work or school. Please
consult your physician for diagnosis and treatment.
You may contact Cook County Department
of Public Health for more information at 708-492-2150 or
go online to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention at flu.gov for daily updates.
